What to pack for a high-altitude trek: complete Salkantay packing list
The packing list our guides use: layers, footwear, first-aid kit, documents and what you can rent in Cusco.
The essentials in 30 seconds
- Dress in layers: base, mid and waterproof outer.
- Wear broken-in boots.
- Bring your original passport and cash in soles.
- Mules carry up to 7 kg per person.
On Salkantay you can go from −5 °C at the high camp to 25 °C in the jungle on the same trek. The key is not to pack a lot, but to pack right. This is the list we recommend to our travelers.
Clothing: the layering system
- Base layer: 2 thermal or quick-dry shirts (avoid cotton).
- Mid layer: fleece or light down jacket.
- Outer layer: waterproof, windproof jacket.
- 2 trekking pants (one can be convertible).
- Wool hat, sun cap, gloves and buff.
- 3–4 pairs of trekking socks.
Footwear
Broken-in trekking boots with good grip and ankle support, plus sandals for camp. Never wear new boots on the trek.
Gear
- 25–30 L daypack with rain cover.
- Sleeping bag rated to −10 °C (you can rent one from us).
- Headlamp with spare batteries.
- Trekking poles (highly recommended for descents).
- 2 L water bottle or hydration bladder.
Personal first-aid kit
- Your personal medication.
- SPF 50 sunscreen, lip balm and insect repellent.
- Blister plasters, painkillers and rehydration salts.
Documents and money
- Original passport (mandatory for Machu Picchu and the train).
- Valid student card if you booked a student rate.
- Cash in soles for toilets, snacks, hot springs and tips.
